I dunno, I think deep down inside, a lot of us react the way the writer wrote when we see an obese person, but we don't really present our feelings the way Maura did. My mother struggled with morbid obesity and it wasn't until she had a gastric bypass surgery that she won. Even with that surgery, however, it isn't easy. She has to watch what she eats and can't have any carbonation. It's almost like she's on a super-diet, and she’s managed to drop a couple of hundred pounds! Do I find myself leaning towards how the writer feels about morbidly obese intimacy? Ya, pretty close, but I also wouldn’t want to watch myself make out with someone so there you go. Would I ever put that in writing in a national publication that could potentially hurt someone immensely? Not for a million dollars! I think it’s just easy for people to become use to bagging on others to get ratings. (Like you said she did a couple of other controversial articles before, but she just had to keep pushing until she found the magic “1700 comments” button.) One last thing, for those of us who think dieting and exercise are all obese people have to do, I would encourage you to spend some time with someone who IS obese and witness the effect that just being obese has on a person. Loosing 200lbs without immense peer support (and possibly surgical alterations) would be like trying to push-start a semi uphill. We have something in common... my mom just lost nearly 100 pounds herself through change in diet. I could drop a few pounds myself especially after having a baby 6 months ago. I tell my husband it wouldn't be a problem if the food didn't taste so damn good.
